Calendar of Events June 10, 2012: The Retreat from Gettysburg at the Martin House Bed and Breakfast. This portion of the Gettysburg Fringe Festival will be home to many Civil War themed activities. The highlight of the event will be trolley tours of the Monterey Pass Battlefield, the first one beginning at 3:30 pm, and the second one at 6:30 pm will feature Civil War Historian, John A. Miller. Guest speakers will be on hand throughout the day, including John A. Miller, who will focus on the Fountaindale skirmish in what many Cole's Cavalry veterans called "The First Blood Spilled in Adams County." Other activities of the day will include Civil War authors, living historians educating the public on the role of the Civil War soldier, a Civil War undertaker, log cabin demonstrations and much more. All proceeds from the trolley tours and additional donations will go to the Friends of Monterey Pass Battlefield, Inc. for battlefield preservation. For more information, please contact the Martin House Bed and Breakfast June 30 - July 1, 2012: The Confederate Retreat Through Monterey Pass. Discover how the Confederate soldier survived the march through Monterey Pass, in what many had dubbed as “Mount Misery.” Learn about the Battle of Monterey Pass and the Confederate march into South Mountain. Living historians from the Cornstalk Mess will demonstrate how soldiers made meals, maintained their weapons, uniforms, and much more. The Civilians of Cumberland Valley will also be on hand to describe the experiences of the non-combatant in the wake of the Confederate Retreat. The event is open to the public from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday and from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Sunday. Battlefield talks and tours will be held throughout the day at Rolando Woods Lion’s Club Park. Artifact exhibits, membership drive and battle information will be available at the Monterey Pass Battlefield Park. Miller July 21, 2012: Blue Ridge Summit Library Ice Cream Social from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. The Friends of Monterey Pass Battlefield, Inc. will have exhibits and a display featuring information on the Battle of Monterey Pass and how you can assist in preservation efforts of the Monterey Pass Battlefield. Free admission November 3, 2012: Blue Ridge Summit Fall Fair, 9:00 am-3:00 pm at the Blue Ridge Summit Fire Department. Join the staff of the Friends of Monterey Pass Battlefield, Inc. during the Fall Fair. Information about membership will be made available as well as Carol Smith's "The Battle of Monterey Pass" painting and books. Stop by the booth and talk with board members about preservation efforts and other important news. Free admission December 15, 2012: "A Civil War Christmas" Open House from 10:00 am-5:00 pm. Come celebrate a Civil War Christmas during this Holiday Open House event. Interpreters of the Citizens of Cumberland Valley will decorate the Visitor's Center at the Monterey Pass Battlefield Park in festive themes using natural materials, such as holly, fruits, cranberry & popcorn strands. Interpreters will be available to discuss how the common soldier spent his time on furlough with friends and family. At 6:30 pm join us at the Blue Ridge Summit Plaza, for more special community events. A Victorian era church service will be held and include John A. Miller recapping the events of 1862, and prepare church visitors for what is to come in 1863, with the Invasion of Pennsylvania. Free admission.
